Made in the hopeful post-World War II era that produced such classics of social conscience as The Search and Intruder in the Dust, this provocative film is a fable for its time — and ours. It tells the supernatural-tinged story of an orphan who finds a safe haven in small-town America until the day his hair turns green. Then the townfolk turn against him, frightened by the change they cannot understand. A call for tolerance, an inspiring statement that “different” doesn’t mean “threatening,” The Boy with Green Hair boasts a fine cast (Robert Ryan, Pat O’Brien, Dean Stockwell), a popular theme song (Nature Boy) and the feature-film debut of director Joseph Losey (The Servant, The Go-Between).

    Great transfer to bluray
This family-friendly movie is a clean and crisp transfer to bluray. Young Dean Stockwell is a great actor. The disc also includes a short film “A Really Important Person” in black and white.

    The message lives on today
As a child in New York City, I watched The Boy With Green Hair on Million Dollar Movie, WOR channel 9. The movie would run all week long with multiple showings on weekends. I watched the movie every night. As a child, I missed the salient point of the movie, it went right over my head.War, bigotry, bullying, the effects of these things upon children. As an adult, I appreciate the message more than ever. To be frightened over someone who is different, to look for scapegoats, to revile the child and never actually listen to his message. Think about it, those who are different today are still not accepted as they should be in our society. Shave the green hair, and everything goes back to normal, right. No quite, the message was given you by Peter, so take the time to actually listed, not be judgmental and become a better person.Oh, when I saw the movie as an adult, it was the first time that I watched it in color, how vivid was Peter’s hair. No color television back in the days of my childhood.Watch it with your family, enjoy it and remember that, “War is bad for children.”

Bought this to see Dean Stockwell
Good movie – Dean Stockwell was a great child actor as well as a grown-up. I gave this only four stars as we do not get to know two things, why, and later.

Beware of VERY Poor Copy of this Movie
Currently Amazon offers two DVD versions of this wonderful film: 1) The WB Archive Collection copy and 2) Something Else. The ‘Else’ copy turns out to be a HUGE Mistake. It’s DVD Cover says it is from ‘Terra Entertainment’ and is numbered TE-2103D. Good luck in locating them on the web. I could not. The disc appears to be a DVD-R copy of a VCR recording (my guess.) The images are blurred (fuzzy) and the sound is muffled (scratchy.) I have ‘tsk-tsk’ed Amazon for even carrying this item.I have previously owned a copy of the WB Archive edition …and it is fine. I quickly reordered that version after watching 5 minutes of the ‘Else’ fiasco. I didn’t finish watching it. Perhaps it gets better. I doubt it.The problem with these Amazon DVD Product Reviews is that they are not linked to a specific Product but are duplicated on EVERY offering of a film title. That is of little help in selecting the best disc. These should be reviews of the specific Plastic Disc offering. They should not be general Film Reviews. Amazon is NOT IMDb. They are a vender of many competing copies of many films. These reviews should help us make choices. They don’t.So… if you are reading this review under the WB version of the film, ignore me. You are making a good choice here. However, if you have wandered into ‘Else’ territory, you should leave and find the WB people. They may have some other good film ideas for you.UPDATE Note: Changed vendor name from ‘Verizon’ to ‘Amazon.’ Sorry for the stupid error.

    Great movie! Great quality!
This was the first time watching this movie. It’s always been a movie I’ve wanted to pick up and watch since it came out on Blu-ray last year. I’m glad I did! Also the color and quality on this transfer is amazing. I highly recommend!

    Expect the unexpected!
Nice story about an orphan boy who wakes up with green hair…as you might expect he is generally shunned…it all works out in the end as the boy completes a journey of self-discovery…my 7 year old granddaughter Molly loved it…it provides a timey message and O’Brien is very good…with a solid supporting cast…also gives the message that magic is very real!

    The Boy with Green Hair
This DVD Movie reminds me of the statement in the news media that I heard many times as a young boy like Dean Stockwell during the Post WW II years that ” …. mankind has not crossed over into Jordan.” because the threats of war and nuclear proliferation remained. In the 21st Century with the same threats we have not crossed over into Jordan also. As a young boy, Dean Stockwell with the well known Irish actor Pat O’Brien and Robert Ryan portray a supernatural-fabled story that is a superb call for tolerance and being different does not mean dangerous. Just like the end of WW II, in our days we have orphans of dead military parents who perished in the line of duty. In this DVD fable an orphan boy finds sanctuary with an improvised Grandfather in a small town; then his hair turned green mysteriously and the whole town turned against him due to fearful ignorance. The finale of this movie is superb with the parting message hope is the beginning of understanding, mercy, compassion and the courage to carry on in the future. Excellent, comedy, drama and fantasy with natural meaning for all ages. Although this DVD did not have language captions, especially English for the hearing impaired, still I rate as 5 stars plus!

A wonderful childhood memory is now on DVD!
I was maybe just about 10 years old in the mid 1950s when I saw this film one Saturday morning in my Church basement. I was so moved by this sentimental “message” movie that I never forgot it. A marvelous cast with Pat O’Brien, Robert Ryan and Barbara Hale surround a very young Dean Stockwell who searches for reasons to explain his Green Hair. I am in my mid 70s now and I still tear up at this young man’s plight. I thought it I would never see it again and now I have a copy that has been beautifully restored. Gratefull!

The transfer is terrible–poor colour, poor sound, poor picture. Not worth the expense.

The message of this film is clear: No More War. This film is a rather charming and persuasive entreaty from the children of this world to the adults to stop rushing headlong into conflict, and to remember that their decisions affect others who are rendered powerless to affect their own destinies.

This dvd is a disgrace .It is poorly copied from VHS and is fuzzy with washed out colours and even has dropout in places.Save your money and buy the official Warner Brothers release which is excellent quality.Michael

Lovely film, well done, points out how being different can affect your life.

A boy with green hair? Well, actually it’s all about tolerance. But it’s been done in such a way that the message never distracts your attention – it’s just there, without pointing fingers. Quite an unusual film, but recommended to anyone who likes classic cinema.
